| What is a non-profit? A corporation that has a legal document making it a 501(c)(3). People working there get paid a reasonable salary, or can volunteer their time. How do I get started? - Check to see if a local existing organization would like you to join them. Many places would love to be able to say they have a recording studio. Then you have non-profit status and a ready-made network. - Apply for grant money right away and follow up so you can pay the recording engineer. Ask the engineer if they will supply the needed equipment until you have enough grant money to buy it. How do I succeed? - Set prices, for example, $15/hr to record and $10/song to mix. Grant money supplements the true cost to record. - Network with music teachers so they know about the studio. - Hang fliers up at all the music stores. - Have business cards printed, & use them as a cost-effective way to promote the studio. - Encourage interns to volunteer for experience and fun. |
